I’ve changed my mind about Led Zeppelin. I had always thought their third album, Led Zeppelin III (1970), was their best. This has changed.
Recently, while watching the Netflix original series Mindhunter, I was reminded of Led Zeppelin’s double album, Physical Graffiti (1975). Episode 10 of Season one samples their song “In the Light” to end the season. Hearing this song inspired me to download a copy of the album. (I sold all my vinyl last year, trading in sound quality and nostalgia for convenience and portability.)
On a drive from Georgia to Virginia I listened to the album about ten times. I’m not usually a fan of double albums as they are often too much of everything but this one is an exception. I believe Physical Graffiti is their best album.
However, there is a challenger. For those of you who thought Led Zeppelin’s last album In Through the Out Door (1979) was anticlimactic and were left wanting more, there is hope. This year saw the release of From the Fires by a band called Greta Van Fleet. They carry the Rock & Roll torch for a new generation. Give them a listen and see if you agree with me.
