Thank you for visiting Dato’s Haberdashery. I started Dato’s Haberdashery two years ago because I wanted to share. The Dato’s Haberdashery website went live on Saturday, October 14, 2017 and I made the first post, “Picture, then Write”, on October 20th, 2017. And this came after eleven years of thinking about creating a blog. It took me eleven years to decide to blog because I was afraid. Thankfully my desire to connect and to share allowed me to overcome my fear.
I created ground rules for Dato’s to help me stay on course.
Dato’s Haberdashery Ground Rules
Tell a story
Do no harm
Connect the dots
Original content (thoughts, words, sketches, and photographs)
Maintain a black & white theme
Use good judgement but share boldy, generously
Encourage others to be creative
I think I’ve adhered to all the these ground rules except the black & white theme. During the early days of the Dato’s I created black & white sketches of my photographs using an application called PhotoSketcher. I received many compliments about these sketches but I decided I wanted to use color as well so I decided to overlook this ground rule.
In June of 2018 I was bitten by the typewriter bug. This would affect me and Dato’s Haberdashery. First, it re-opened a world of joy I had forgotten since high school. My love of typing, which had lain dormant decades, was awakened. Second, the typewriters - yes there are more than one - increased the quantity of my writing and, in turn, improved the quality of my writing. (Some may disagree.) Third, I joined the subculture of the typewriter revival and I have gained many like-minded acquaintances and a few typewriter penpals. Of course typewriters have changed the appearance and the content of Dato’s Haberdashery. I routinely typecast (post a photograph of a typewritten document) on Dato’s and often my topic is typewriter-related.
With Dato’s Haberdashery I wanted to find and connect with people who might have similar experiences, ideas, or interests. I have found these people or, at least, some of them, in 46 of the 50 states and in these international locations: Canada, France, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Ireland, Hungary, South Africa, Italy, Finland, Spain, Argentina, Norway, Brazil, Georgia, Netherlands, India, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Iceland, Hong Kong, Slovenia, Aland Islands, Philippines, Switzerland, New Zealand, Mauritius, Ukraine, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Albania, Poland, Costa Rica, Benin, The Czech Republic, Estonia, United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Belgium, Japan, Latvia, Jordan, Turkey, Russia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
As my brother is known to say “Not bad for a boy from May-retta”. (I was raised in Marietta, Georgia.) From fear to connection, it’s been a rewarding two years at Dato’s. I will keep “shipping my work” until I have no more to ship. Thank you for visiting, thank you for reading, thank you for commenting, thanks for the encouragement, thank you for your time and attention, and thank you for the connection.
