I needed one toothpick to repair a piece of furniture. A wood screw had stripped the threads out of a hole on the leg of a piece of furniture. I had used this method before. Stick a wooden toothpick in the hole and break it off flush with the hole. Add some wood glue and re-thread the screw into the hole. Voila’! Not elegant, but effective. I’ve repaired doors this way and now I’ve reattached the leg to a lovely credenza.
We had no toothpicks in the house so I had to make a trip to the grocery store to buy some. I discovered I had two choices: a 250 count package of “L’Elegence” toothpicks or, for less money, an 800 count package of “up & up” toothpicks. I needed one toothpick. Choices, choices. Do I buy elegance or do I buy the humble and generic “Rain Man” size containing 800 toothpicks? I splurged and opted for elegance and ignored my wallet. I bought the package of 250. And now there are 249 left in the box. Or is there? I will never know. I’m not going to count them. I am no Rain Man.
